SCE&G Announces New Renewable Energy Business Team and Solar Focus
Company Anticipates Adding up to 20-Megawatts of New Solar to System with Multiple Installations Across Its Service Territory

After months of research and study South Carolina Electric & Gas Company (SCE&G) is taking significant steps in strengthening its commitment to renewable energy by announcing the formation of SCE&G’s new Renewable Energy Products and Services team. This new team will develop a comprehensive strategy for the design, implementation and marketing of renewable energy resources such as solar, wind and biomass throughout SCE&G’s service territory.
The immediate focus will be implementing a solar energy strategy while continuing to study opportunities with other renewable sources. SCE&G anticipates placing up to 20-megawatts of new solar on its system with installations in multiple locations across the SCE&G service territory. The first 2-megawatt solar farm will be built on seven acres near the Lake Murray Dam in 2014. More details will be announced about this and future projects in the coming months. The team will also work collaboratively to develop solar solutions and programs for businesses, non-profits and residential customers.
"SCE&G is committed to developing renewable energy resources that will contribute to South Carolina’s sustainable energy future. The formation of our Renewable Energy team takes us one step closer to achieving that goal," explained Kevin Marsh, chairman and CEO of SCANA, parent company of SCE&G. "As we continue diversifying our generation mix, we strive for a more balanced energy portfolio which will include new and clean energy resources. We will work with our customers to protect the environment and reduce our overall emission levels by adding more renewable energy resources to South Carolina’s power supply.”
No other South Carolina utility has more solar energy on its system than SCE&G. In fact, the company has been actively pursuing solar projects for the past several years and has a total of 4-megawatts of solar on its system, including a 2.6-megawatt rooftop installation at Boeing’s 787 Final Assembly Facility in North Charleston.
The new Renewable Energy team will be managed by experienced and committed energy professionals. Marcus Harris, P.E., who has 22 years of experience working in various leadership roles within the company, will lead the group as general manager. He will be joined by Joe Hodges, Jr., P.E., serving as manager of renewable systems integration, who has 24 years of experience in power systems; Casey Logan, P.E., a power quality engineer with SCE&G, who manages interconnectivity for all of the company’s net metering and projects related to SCE&G’s Renewables Products and Services; and Therese Griffin, manager for marketing and sales, who has extensive marketing, strategic communications, philanthropy and community relations experience from her 19 year career with the company.

Video Learning Center Now Open
The Green Building Council of Greater Columbia strives to make the vast and often times confusing world of green building easier to understand and participate in by educating builders and the public about the techniques and processes of building green. The council regularly hosts educational sessions, workshops and meetings on the topic, but now we have a new method of instruction: on-line videos.
The new Video Learning Center at the council website (click here to visit) features videos from council members on the techniques and tests used in building green or high-performance homes, and products touted as being green. Viewers can learn more about the blower-door test used to determine a building's HERS score, how insulation works, and techniques for sealing a home.
The Video Learning Center is brand new and features 15 videos from Claude St. Hilaire of Home Energy Group talking about various building techniques and tests. We plan to add more videos on a variety of topics throughout the year.
